Cipher glass by Damjan Stankovic

“When the Cipher glass is empty, it resembles a meaningless colourful mosaic. When a drink is poured into it, the name of the drink is revealed.”

Differently coloured squares are scattered across the glass surface in a seemingly random pattern to hide the name of drinks which can only be revealed when the glass is filled. The Cipher glass concept, which has won 2009 reddot design award, is designed by Damjan Stanković.

So does it work in a way that if you pour orange juice since it’s orange the colors work their ways to reveal ORANGE and if it’s white, it reveals MILK? or is he just crazy? ^^

Yupe it is, each side of the glass is reserved for a specific drink. ^^

this is only a concept but the design dosent work. if you take the images into photoshop and apply the correct colour filters it dosent actually reveal anything. for this design to work they would have to be able to see the word milk written in the corresponding colour already within the mosaic. its a nice idea but i think it wouldn’t be as effective as the images you see here.

dude, it does work, it wont work in photoshop because you are not taking into account the clear section of the class is shown as gray (ie the background), therefore you are retarded, this design does work, I have seen it myself work.

Of course it’s not going to work if you try doing it in photoshop. Photoshop is a 2 dimensional program. Think 3 dimensional. On an empty glass, you are seeing the colors on the other side of the glass as well as the ones facing you. However, when you fill it up the colors on the other side are hidden from view therefore only showing you the colors in front of you plus the color of the beverage. Tried it Microstation (3d of course) and it works. Very unique idea.

ummm, how do you tell the empty glasses apart if they only reveal the words when the right drink is poured in?! you’ll end up throwing milk into the orange glass and then there is actually no purpose to the design….

it’s great, but it needs more thinking!! how about placing all the words on the same glass, so no matter what you throw in, it reveals the words…

Optat1velt said this on Dec 14 09 at 10:11 pm

Hiya, each side of the glass is reserved for a specific drink, so it depends on the liquid colour that you pour into the glass. So you can say that all the words are on the same glass.

hipbip said this on Dec 15 09 at 11:39 am

it uses 2 different colors, transparent and, for the milk, white. If you fill the glass with the white then the transparent becomes white, showing you the word clearly. If you look closely, you can see the word made out of both colors.
